Digital Marketer & Instagrammer
Hope you all are having a fantastic week!
This week’s interview goes to one of my favourite Instagrammers: Mr.Wright!
We had a ‘healthy’ juice while chatting about Instagram and Photography!
My advice is simple and it is something I live by, create good content and shoot what you want to!
More than about his job I asked Vaughn about his love for photography and for Instagram!
1. What made you interested in photography?
I have always loved taking photos but never thought much of it until I joined Instagram. Pre-Instagram and while at varsity I taught myself how to shoot on film, mainly photos of friends and varsity life which I would share on Facebook as I wanted to document that time of my life. My interest in photography quickly escalated when I got an iPod touch in 2012, I downloaded the Instagram app after a friend had told about the cool filters you could add to your photos and honestly at first I hated the app, my original image was now cropped to 1×1 and it was on the internet for everyone to see, I mean all I wanted was for my picture to look pretty, not for the whole world to see it! Anyway, I soon got over these issues and became addicted to the thrill of a new like, follow or comment. It pushed me to create better images, so much so that I had to upgrade to an iPhone almost immediately. I started posting images from my phone quite regularly and did so for about 2 years until I decided it was time to take things the next level and upgrade to a DSLR.
2. What’s your opinion about Instagram?
I love Social media, as a Digital Marketer I owe my career to it, but what I love most about Social Media is how it allows us to tell our stories in our own unique way, and quite often without us even knowing it. Instagram is by far my most favourite Social Media, it is the first thing I look at before work and probably the last thing I see before I go to bed. There are so many talented people out there sharing their work on this amazing platform it is hard not to feel inspired and motivated to create every single day. I have made so many friends through the app and have had some amazing experiences because of it. To some people Instagram is a place for you to post your latest selfie, or the super healthy meal you had for breakfast and I think that’s cool, to others it’s a place where they can express their creativity and share what they think, feel and love, with millions of people, for me this is what the platform is all about and I love being part of its journey.
3. We see you have a big following on your Instagram. What advice can you give to the people wanting to expand their following?
Thank you, I am honestly so grateful to each person that follows me. My advice is simple and it is something I live by, create good content and shoot what you want to! I can’t say that I have a particular style or favourite subject matter, but that doesn’t bother me right now, I am trying to shoot as many things as I possibly can until I find that one thing I want to shoot for rest of my days. Besides shooting what you like, take some time to learn the art of photography, fundamentals like composition and lighting are key to creating beautiful images and are all part of the wonderful journey into photography. Find photographers that inspire you, learn from them, study their images and then go out and a find the shot.

4. What’s your favourite Instagram account and why?
Wow, that’s a tough one. I am inspired by many photographers on Instagram and the list is constantly changing, at the moment I am really into street photography and I love the work of David Kruger (@dave.krugman) and Paola Franqui (@monaris_).
5. Tell us more about your 52-week challenge.
At the end of last year I wanted to challenge myself to shoot as many topics and things as possible in one year, the more you shoot the better you get and ultimately that is what I wanted to do. So the #vaughnshoots52 project was born, a new theme every Monday for 52 weeks. Initially, I ran it off my Instagram account, but recently I decided to run it from my blog (www.justwright.co.za). I have been rather bad at updating the blog, but nevertheless I am still constantly shooting and pushing myself to learn as much as I can about photography.
Here is Vaugh’s 3 favourite photos from 2015:
Hope you all feel inspired to go and shoot! I believe the best way to learn is doing it.. So, grab your camera or phone and go explore! We only have that much time… So don’t waste it!
